Nine Ladies Dancing

Merry 9th Day of Christmas  

For many years, my mom gave me and my sisters a subscription to a magazine called Angels on Earth. It is a sweet little periodical that comes out 6 times a year and is filled with stories of everyday people and how their lives have been impacted by angels – either in the form of other people or some kind of angelic or spiritual presence.  

I still subscribe to this magazine and enjoy reading it each month. The stories are inspirational and the images in it are lovely. 

Today’s meaning for this particular day in the Christmas season is all about angels, too. 

Why ladies dancing on the Ninth Day of Christmas? 

The nine ladies dancing represent the nine choirs of angels. Here they are in ascending order: 

1.  Angels 
2. Archangels 
3. Principalities 
4. Powers
5. Virtues 
6. Dominations 
7. Thrones 
8. Cherubim 
9. Seraphim 

We never know how many angels surround us  

I know I have many people in my life who are my angels – my husband, adult children, my siblings. I am sure my Guardian Angel is often shaking her head, so it is good to have people looking out for me, too! 😊 

I thought to look around our home for angel figurines and ornaments, particularly during this Christmas season when our decorations are out. It seems I have quite a few of them: ornaments, Christmas tree topper, Nativity angels, brass candlestick holders, the stained glass angel my husband made and the ever-darling plastic popcorn window angel (she belonged to my maternal grandmother!).  

It seems we have a collection of about 36 angel figurines in our house! I can imagine we probably have far more that number in spiritual angels looking out for us, too! 

Who are your special angels on earth? And who might you be an angel to in your everyday life? Perhaps take a few moments to offer a prayer of petition to your Guardian Angel. Here is a short prayer I like

Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
